Crews from Arlington and surrounding departments extinguished a three-alarm fire that broke out at an apartment complex that sent flames shooting through the roof.

Hundreds of Virginia firefighters battled a three-alarm fire that erupted at an apartment complex early Monday, according to WJLA-TV.

Crews from the Arlington Fire Department and other departments in the area responded to an attic fire at The Citizen at Shirlington Village apartment building just after 6 a.m., ARLnow reports. Flames shot through the roof, and a column of smoke could be seen for miles.

A third alarm was raised because of the building's complicated layout, the Arlington Fire Department told WUSA-TV. Firefighters used a ladder pipe to funnel water to the fire, which was under control shortly after 6:30 a.m.

The fire displaced between 40 and 60 residents, and one person was treated for minor injuries. No firefighters were injured during the call.

“We’re very happy that everyone’s safe,” Arlington Fire Department spokesman Taylor Blunt told WTOP-TV. “We’re keeping residents updated, and we hope to have them back in the unaffected areas of the building within the next couple of hours.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
